Default <div> section verticle size

I've created a <div> section in HTML that is 1000 pixels wide.

In CSS I told it to set the background to red.
It is only as tall vertically as the amount of content I have.

How do I stretch it vertically to fit however tall the web page is?
I can't seem to find anything about it online.

Thanks
-David
